The short answer to your question is, probably not. Anytime you face an opponent, especially numerous opponents in a real life situation, expect to take some punishment no matter what art you have been studying. If anyone believe that they can study only five years, no matter what the art, face five people intent on creating serious bodily harm and defeat them without incurring any injuries they are living in a Hollywood world. Regardless of the art you choose, five years of study, even if you dedicate four to six hours per day every day, will not make into a superman.

Having said that, anyone who states that Tai Chi Chuan is not a viable fighting art is delusional. While I will agree that what many people present as Tai Chi Chuan would not do much to help you fight your way out of a wet paper bag, true authentic Tai Chi Chuan is a different creature all together. If you would read the history of this art in its various manifestations you would find many great martial arts masters who were known to be very competent fighters. As an example, Yang Lu Chan of Yang style Tai Chi Chuan was known for killing 18 others martial arts masters in weapons duels. It is well known that Yang Lu Chan’s daughter was killed during training while practicing the two person spear form with her father. He then refused to teach the form to anyone else. There have been many great masters from the Chen village, the birthplace of Chen style Tai Chi Chuan. These two styles by the way are not the only manifestations of the art. Historically, Tai Chi Chuan has stood the test of time and proven itself to be a complete and effective martial art.

Now, your job is to find a teacher who is competent and capable of teaching the complete art from a martial arts perspective and explain the health benefits that the art is famous for today.

Good Luck

It depends how you practice. I always tell people that Tai Chi is an add on for martial arts not a stand alone fighting system. It has some great techniques in and it does teach you alot of really great things but I would advise taking it with some TRADITIONAL kung fu not this modern wushu junk thats made to look pretty. If you have great speed and technique it looks pretty without the flips. Anyways some good traditional styles are eagle claw and drunken kung fu , but drunken kung fu is only good once you get really good at it otherwise you'll just get hurt. Also you may wanna give muy thai and jujitsu a shot. Or I hear freestyle karate is well rounded

Practicing taichi for only 5 years would not get you to defend against a single attacker(unless you come across a good teacher, you're on the right start), dont even mention multiple attackers.
Taking multiple people is very hard. maybe your better chance would be learning baguazhang for self defence as it teaches how to deal w/ multiple attackers at more advanced levels.
Taichi is like vintage wine, it takes many years of continous practice until what you learn becomes the "cream". Having a good teacher that have thorough understandings of the classical taichi concepts is very very important.

not if you learn the tai chi most people teach.and only a fool would wait till the ppl surrounded them before they defended themselves.fighting multiple opponents you should expect to get hurt.just doing martial arts for 5 years isn't going to mean you can beat multiple opponents,no matter what the style.

there is no art that will help you defend yourself against 5 men without getting hurt that doesn't involve weapons.

odds are tai chi won't help you against even a single opponent if you don't train it properly.

I would suggest testing what you are learning against a friend who is fully resisting you and see if it works (without telling him to "go soft" as he wouldn't in a real fight).
