Berners are supposed to weight 80-130lbs, but I have never seen one in that weighed over 115lbs that was not overweight. Females are generally smaller than males, so they will usually be on the low end of the average weight. I have seen some males that weight right around 65 lbs even thought they are AKC registered, it just depends on the genetics that they dog gets. My Berner weighs 95lbs, and he is in ideal condition, but he may gain a little more because he is only about 18 months old.

While I was reading many of the answers to this question I have noticed that many of these bernese mountain dogs are very much overweight! There are two types of berner sennunhunds (the real name for the bernese mountain dogs) out there, and you can tell by the body, even as a puppy. If they look chucky as a pup, with short legs you know you may have an overweight dog, and that will need a lot of help if you dont want it to be overweight, like excercising. And then you will have some that will not be overweight, and can tell because they have long legs as a pup with a wider body. I have one berner whcih is about 110 lbs and he is on a dog sledging team.
We were told our pup was going to be overweight so at an early age we gave him the right amount of food and excercise and we have the perfect weight for a mountain dog.
People who have berners that are 130-150 lbs need to give the dogs more excercise.
But one warning take care of the berner, they may be big but their bodies are fragile. They may have problems with their hips and elbows if they excercise to much. And many have had problems in the past with cancer.
Take it from someone that is raising a true Swiss dog in its native land of Switzerland.
