Ducks and/or geese migrate south for the winter, but where do they go when a day is just unseasonably cold? I feel like I see less of them out on cold days.

Generally they're just foraging for food. If the day is really cold they'll tend to stay in water because if it's lower than freezing, the water is actually warmer than the surrounding air and the ducks themselves can keep the water surface from freezing (to some extent) by paddling around and keeping the water disturbed. I also find that with my own ducks if it's very cold they'll find someplace in the sun and take naps quite a bit during the day.

Too many ducks hang around cold climates if food is available - a bad side of people feeding them. They stay around here (Nova Scotia) all winter - seeking what little open water they can, or waddling around on top of the ice.
