You don't know unless you find out what they are really about, but I question many of their motives. If their motive is to bring mankind closer to God, I have no problem with them, but why does anyone think they have any more of a "calling" than I do? I don't proclaim that I have heard a voice from heaven to preach the gospel to others, but if I did, I would hope that I wouldn't deny it. I believe if Christ were here today he would have a single way of doing things, but we are not all the same. As long as we are on a path that leads us to strive to be a better person, I don't have a problem with all of the different thoughts, religions and self-proclaimed leaders.

They are not all frauds, some are very sincere about what they do. There have been some that have gotten into the spotlight for reasons other than glorifying God and they have been exposed as frauds. I have never met a "religious leader" personally that has turned out to be a fraud. I would say 98% of them are quite the opposite. God loves you and you have time to change your life before it is to late. The Lord and Savior Jesus Christ is very real and so are the majority of the people that follow him.

Because they are self-proclaimed. Better to stick with the God-proclaimed ones. Or better yet, follow Jesus the Christ Himself, and realize that God-ordained religious leaders are here for our benefit, but you cannot use them to have a relationship with God by proxy. In other words, learn from them but follow Christ. Realize that they are failable, even the best of them, just like you.
There are a few well known "religious leaders" who have some good things to say sometimes. Andrew Wommack for one (though he isn't that well known). He is actually a friend of a friend, and I have no doubt as to his authenticity. But there are others, who shall remain nameless, who have sent up lots of red flags when I've listened to them.
To know God, you have to know His Word, the Bible, for youself. Read it, and equip yourself to use it to examine anything anyone else says. Then "You can test and approve what is the will of God, what is good and well pleasing and perfect." (Romans 12:2) Don't try to be too synical, though. As I said not all of them are bad.
I hope this helps, and God bless!

If you will read your question carefully you will discover your answer within your own question. Notice you stated, "self proclaimed." There are many false prophets today in all religions. Sadly, as a Christian I must confess there are many in our ranks that profess to be prophets of God, but serve their own selfish desires, motives, and lust. Secondly you use the term "religious." Unfortunately much of religion has become ritualistic, ceremonial, and legalistic. Again, as a Christian I find many of these elements in professing Christianity today as well.
Please do understand that true Christianity is alive and well because it is grounded in a relationship with a risen Savior. It is personal and intimate between the Lord Jesus Christ and those that have accepted Him as Lord and Savior. We claim nothing but that without Christ we are nothing and we have nothing.
Thanks for your question and I do hope I have been of some help. Thanks.

Because they're "self-proclaimed." They're as human as anyone and have the same faults as we all do. In addition, they have a spotlight on them 24/7 just waiting for them to "screw up" in a big way. Try living completely righteously under that kind of scrutiny.

Self proclaimed says it all ... God didn't call them, they called themselves. There are many great religious leaders who aren't corrupt ... Billy Graham, James Dobson and James Robison are a few. Peace :-)

I think the key is in your question: self-proclaimed. Anyone who exalts themselves usually will come crashing down because they don't have God's grace or anointing to stay there. Any of us could fall at any time if we don't lean on God and understand that we have weaknesses and we need His help.

If you have to proclaim it yourself then you are a fake. only when others proclaim it for you without you paying them off then you might bed the real deal.

Why are all our politicians frauds, and our entertainers frauds?
GREED is why. With power comes money, with money comes greed. Same goes with religious leaders.
