I have a bible in front of me and I was reading the first parts of genesis. In this version, it reads, "God created humankind in his image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them" Genesis 1:27
But then it goes on, and there is a little note in between that says, "Another account of the creation" and then it goes on about the story of Adam and Eve.
So, christians, are both of these stories true, or just one of them? If the first account is true, then it certainly explains the sudden existence of Cain's wives.
Please explain.....Which version of the bible am I reading? Or am I reading a compiled bible with all the versions?

I have the NRSV. I'd never even heard of it until I dug it out of my bf's bookcase. But I don't know what that means. Please enlighten me.

It's the same story, it's just repeated emphasizing different details. That goes on a lot in the Old Testament.

That's a distinctly Hebrew style of writing where an account is given, then more detail is provided. Therefore, these aren't two separate stories, but a Hebrew style of recounting something.

The Bible is a Hebrew work through and through. It is not "western" thought, as many people would like to believe, but distinctly eastern. Christians are (or should be) aware of the "Jewishness" of the Scriptures.

All the translations are telling the same story really.

Adam and Eve had several children, Cain pro baby took his sister or relative with him. Also God could have made more people even if the Bible does not tell about it.

Abby,
It is all the same account. There are different versions of the Bible. There is the NKJV, KJV,NIV, NRSV,RSV, TEV, etc. If you look on the side of your bible, or if you look on the inside cover of your bible, it will tell you what version of the bible that you are reading out of.

May God bless you as you study his word.

the first part is talking about the whole events of creation, where then when it talks about adam and eve it recounting the details of the "He created them; male and femail", just like when the gospel of John talks about "in the begining was the word" which is just a precurser to telling the story of the word - Jesus. i'm not sure what version you have that says it's "another account", but it's the same story, one with names one without.

the bible has been edited to remove Adam's first two wives, that is why there is an apparent duplicity, the first account tells of how He created Adam and Lilith, the second comes along much later to tell the story of Eve's creation
