Hello, your obviously an intelligent person to from your question, I know I'm probably stating the obvious here but no two people have the same sexual energy, nor the same sexual motivations in a relationship. So when your really up for some fun he might not be and visa versa. The clever bit is recognising when your both up for it, both in the right mood to take things further. Anyway, heres something you might not have considered. Are you talking about in bed? There's a good chance he wants to be more adventurous too. You could just ask him if he'd be interested or tell him you read about this thing that sounds interesting. But if you are too shy to talk about it you'll have to find another way.
Depending on what it is, you could "spontaneously" come up with the idea in the middle of a session, and just do it. Or you could leave some reference to it lying around so he notices it and starts thinking about it, wondering if you left that out on purpose.
A good way to back into the area is to ask him if there is anything he wants to try b/c you really want to please him. Hopefully he'll ask you the same and then you can tell him.

Go one step at a time.
If you want to have light sex but haven't done that already, the next time you are alone you could place his hand on that part of the body you want him to touch.

Most guys find it a turn on when their girls take initiative. If you are embarrassed or shy you could try blindfolding him. This will help because if you feel silly he can't see you blush. Blindfolds can be incredibly liberating. Start slow, watch his reactions and go for it.

go for it, if you dont want to tell him, let him know by other means, im, txt, or body language. the last works great, and if he reacts in a negative way then at least you know and pull back.
