Bound's hubby here:
The 7mm-08 fires a bullet that is both larger in diameter and heavier than the .223. The 7mm bullet would be better suited to deer sized game.
While the .223 is an accurate round I would limit it's use to varmints. If you are looking for a deer rifle for your son I think the 7mm-08 would be an excellent choice. The 7mm-08 is actually a .308 cartridge necked down to accommodate a 7mm bullet. This is not a 7mm Magnum. This round can be fired in a short actioned rifle such as the Remington Model Seven. This would be an ideal rifle and cartridge choice for your 15 year old son.
I would recommend that you consider the Remington Model Seven in either 7mm-08 or .308 Winchester topped with a Weaver K4 or K6 scope in a Redfield Jr. or Leupold one piece scope mount. This combination will prove to be accurate and rugged and give your son many years of hunting pleasure!
Good luck.

What do you plan to hunt is my question to you. The 223 (5.56 NATO round) Rem. is a Varmint cartridge and projectile wt. from 40 to 60gr.
The 7mm-08 is a great dear round for a young man (or woman) who will not feel a great amount of recoil. The development of the 7mm-08 was a wild-cat round (like many others over the years) and now in factory loaded, the 7mm-08 is a 308 shell necked down to a 7mm projectile. Truly a great medium sized game round, very accurate and flat shooting.

The 7mm-08 is a very suitable deer cartridge especially for younger shooters who need less recoil than say a .308. The .223 is 5.56mm and is too small to be a practical deer round. Here in California it is even illegal to hunt deer with anything smaller than a .24" diameter bullet. The .223 just isn't big or powerful enough.

The 7mm-08 for deer is your best gun .
It has been voted the best deer gun in several hunting magazines. It is 2 classics put together 308 casing 7mm bullet.
A friend of mine has one went to Kentucky deer hunting had no problem was very successful.
Your son is 15 he can handle this gun if he is small in size consider a limbsaver recoil pad, I have them on 2 shot guns and 1 rifle my wife shoots a 270 bolt actin she is 5-6 115 doesn't bother her at all , she also shoots a 12 gauge shot gun no problem.
Price range- was in walmart say a savage stevens, nice gun no scope for under 300 dollars . I would have bought this gun but I am gun poor know. I hope this helps you decide

7mm has a diameter of 0.284 inches - while the 223 is 0.223 inches.
If you plan on hunting in the future - especially for medium to large game - the 7mm-08 is your best bet. In my opinion, the best rifle that I own is a 7mm-08. It is a Browning Micro-Medallian. I liked the rifle so much that I bought one for my father.
With the 7mm-08, you can use bullets ranging from about 100 grains to 200 grains.

Get the boy a the 7mm-08. Once he has that rifle he can reasonably hunt anything in the lower 48 states.

The 7mm08 shoots a .284" bullet, the typical weight being 140 grains, perfect for deer. There are varmint-weight (lighter) bullets available and it's not unreasonable to load to as heavy as 175 grains. The 223 Remington shoots a .224 bullet typically of 55 grains, with some lighter and heavier, making it a popular varmint round, but it's too light for deer.
I've bought 7mm08's for several family members, including a Sako, a Remington 700 Mountain rifle, and a Remington model 7. Never bought one for myself because I use the ballistically identical 7mm Mauser, which has a superb record in the field of 115 years' use.

The .223 is a .22 cal. diameter bullet and the 7mm'08 is about .27-.28 diameter. The .223 is a fast small bullet and the 7mm'08 is a fast high powered rifle bullet. A .30 cal is better for deer size game, .30'06 (7.62 X 63) or .308 (7.62 X 51) or the comm-bloc 7.62 X 39mm.

Depends on what you are hunting. The .223 would be better suited for smaller game like varmints (coyotes, prairie dogs, raccoons) while the 7mm-08 is for medium sized game like most deer.
