There are plenty of online sites to order chicks. If you want a full grown chicken, it can be a bit more difficult.
If you want babies, my first choice is usually Mcmurray hatcheries, where they have reliable service, good selection, and excellent information. They have LOTS of kinds of chickens, from meat chickens, to egg layers, to fancy frizzle chickens.
If you want a grown chicken, then probably eggbid.com would be better, but that's an auction... You'd have to bid, but they've got some good stuff on there.
Buying from the local feed and seed or farm market is Not reliable if you've never bought chickens before. You need to know how to identify healthy chicks because feed and seed and farm market birds aren't always in best health and there's usually no gaurantee the way there is with a good hatchery (where chicks are inspected prior to shipping and can even be given their innoculations if you request it).

Generally to get live chickens you must buy them as day old chicks. Most folks will not ship chickens older than this.
Try www.meyerhatchery.com or
http://www.mcmurrayhatchery.com/
Now the meyer hatchery will also sell 17 week old pullets in spring time but they're expensive that way and i think you actually have to pick them up but ask if you're interested.
The chicks generally arrive in pretty good condition and with heat and feed/water do very well. One other thought is to wait until just around easter when farm stores like Tractor Supply have chicks for sale. However, ordering direct means you can pick the breed that best fits your needs and not random chicks ordered simply for easter.

You can find live chicken for sale at a monthly Reptile Swap. They sell them as feeders for snakes and stuff so they are pretty cheap too. Just type in reptile swap minnesota in any search engine and you'll get a whole list of stuff.

You can buy or order chicks from most farm and fleet stores. Runnings Farm & Fleet carries live chicks right in their stores. You can also order certain breeds and pick them up at the store. If you are not close to a Runnings, try your local supply store. You can also buy directly from hatcheries online. Some local hatcheries include Mouw's Hatchery in Leota, MN and Hoover's Hatchery in Rudd, IA. I believe Runnings uses Hoover's.

Go to your local feed store and have them order you some new born baby chickens, or you can ask some of the quail egg dealers on ebay if they ever have access to chicken babies or eggs they can order for you if you pay them for an auction first.

I would say, go and find a co-op in the area you live in where they actually sell the feed for animals, they would either be able to tell you where to buy or keep them in stock

You could probably ask at a farmers market if there's one in a village or city near you. Even if folks are selling fruits and veggies, if they are the farmers they will probably know someone happy to sell you chickens.
