If you are referring to being in the Infantry, then the answer is no. Females are not allowed in the Infantry. The bill/law that everyone else is talking about was written back in the days of WW2 where there were front lines. It bans females from getting into direct combat e.g. ground combat - Infantry.
But if you do plan to join the military, do expect to see and experience combat. That's the point of being in the military.
As to your question about rank, you can go as high as you take yourself. I am friends with quite a few senior NCOs 2 of them CSMs. and I even met a female Brig. Gen.
Being in the Military is not a job...it's an adventure.
Hooah!

If you join the Marine Corps, Army or Air Force you will probably see some action in Iraq. Since there is no frontline in this war it is hard to keep females away from it. If you join the Navy you will be safe on a ship that will be in the waters off the gulf. It is much nicer and more comfortable to have a real bed to sleep in every night minus the sounds of bombs and gun shots. By the way, once you turn 18 years old you don't need your parents to say yes or no to you joining the military. I highly recommend the Navy. I am a female Navy Veteran and loved every minute I was in. You won't be sorry you chose to serve your country in the Navy. Make sure you go to a ship also, it is more fun than you could ever imagine and you get to see lots of foreign countries and places like Hawaii. Follow your heart, not your paranoid parents. The military is an honest way of life and it will make you a real adult. You can go to college when you are on active duty or you can wait until you get out. Either way it is free. You can't say that about any other job you may get. Also, the highest rank you can achieve is the same as any man. If you enlist in the Navy and stay in long enough you can be a Master Chief. If you had a college education before you went in you could make it all the way to 4 star Admiral. Good luck.

lei,
I'm not sure if women are put into physical combat, but I saw a story about a woman that flew A-10s (tank busting jets) in Iraq. I'm sure that is considered combat on the battlefield. I remember another story about a woman learning to fly f-15s (fighter jets). So, if you mean combat, yes they are allowed on the battlefield. If you mean hand to hand combat, I don't know. Also women are now going through the military academies, so in the future it's hard to believe they will be excluded.
The highest military rank is 'Commander In Chief' (president). Though no females have achieved that yet, I'm certain that they can and probably will in the future.

The highest rank a female can achieve is Commander in Chief - the US President. A President wouldn't usually appear on an active battlefield these days, it's in the office's best interest not to.
I never know whether to grin or roll my eyes at the thought of those New Yorkers turning General George Washington's horse back around to face the battle when ol George took a notion to retreat at the Battle of Monmouth NJ. GW really badmouthed them for that.

Depends on the branch. From what I understand, females can not take an MOS that is considerd a combat-based position. I don't think there is a ceiling on the rank a female can achieve. I hope this helps. Talk to people around you who have more military experience. I'd talk to someone who's high up in different branches to find out if the ranking works any differently for women (although I seriously doubt it does)

There is no limit to what rank a female can achieve. Women are not allowed in combat arms MOSs. There is nothing stating that woman are not allowed on the battlefields. As in Iraq battlefields can pop up anywhere. In some cases women have found themselves trading rounds with the enemy.

In theory, a female can achieve up to and including President (Commander in Chief).
Currently the higest rank achieved in fact has been that of a three-star general officer, in the Navy, Vice Admiral Patricia Ann Tracey; army topped out at Major general in the case of MGN Nancy Adams.
Current US military rules do not permit women in combat per se, yet they do end up in combat type situations, and can and do die... consider the case of Major Megan McClung, nominally a public affairs officer... KIA by an IED.

We are not allowed on combat situations.
In the Coast Guard are Vice Admiral is a female. She is the second highest ranking person. Next to the commandant. Who is the highest officer. There is not highest rank for females. You advance to the top just like the males. In the Coast Guard all jobs are open to women.

No, there is a law passed in the 1990s that forbid females on battlefield. There are female Generals.
