Is it because they are too cheap to buy a hat that covers their entire head?

The yarmulke is the most commonly known and recognized piece of Jewish garb. However, there is no special religious significance to the yarmulke as a specific type of head covering. The word yarmulke is Yiddish. The Hebrew word for this head covering is kippah (pronounced key-pah).

Covering the head is more a custom than a commandment. It is an ancient practice (over 2,000 years) for Jews to cover their heads during prayer. Customs about what it looks like, who wears it, and when it is worn have varied from time to time and from place to place. One source states that this custom probably derives from the fact that in Eastern cultures, it is a sign of respect to cover the head (the custom in Western cultures is the opposite: it is a sign of respect to remove one's hat). Thus, by covering the head during prayer, one showed respect for God. Another source states that in ancient Rome, servants were required to cover their heads while free men did not; thus, Jews covered their heads to show that they were servants of God. Another source states that in medieval times, Jews covered their heads as a reminder that God is always above them.

It's respect for Gd. A sign that G-d is always present. BTW, the Pope's similar cap is taken from Catholicism's use of the Jewish ritual, incorporating it into Catholicism. Had nothing to do with being forced by anyone. @Javed -- thanks for showing what Jews are facing. Source: I'm Jewish

no. they need to be reminded that G-d is above them, and only the men wear them b/c women or more spiritually in tune.

However, it may be G-d that is cheap. He commanded it.

If you mean kippot (Hebrew)/yarmulkes (Yiddish), then it's to show that God is above them, and is meant to remind them of that.

*I don't know for sure, but I heard it was to reject esus as Lord. The bible says for men not to have their head covered during worship. But I heard it from Christian preachers.*
