I have an 87 Ranger and I was trying to install a radio. The previous owner had BUTCHERED the wires. In my attempts, I accidentally left an exposed portion of the dimmer switch wire out. It shorted against metal and now I have no interior dash lights. Everything else works. Did I blow a fuse or did I fry something. I hate driving at night without interior lights, but thank God the truck still works

You most likely just blew a fuse. That,s what they are there for to protect against a short circuit like what happened when the wires touched bare metal. Check all the fuses and you will find one blown I,m sure. Good luck.

Probably a fuse...hopefully. If not you might have burned out the printed circuit on the back of the guage cluster. I can not remember if Ford used inline fuses on the Ranger...if they did, good luck finding that. Don't feel bad, my 18 year old just installed a new stereo in his digital dash New Yorker and burned out $700 worth of digital dash in a $500 car.

Well you already know what caused the problem so repair the wire and check the fuse. It is most likely blown. If it isn't you may want to replace the dimmer itself, but I'd be willing to bet that it's only fuse. Minor damage.

Just simply replace the fuse that the dash lights are on. You just blew a fuse. You didn't fry anything, thats what fuses are there to do is protect equipment.

I hate butchered looms, it is always either the radio or the trailer connection. Mostly it is fixable by either a fuse or a sometimes a switch/dimmer controller.
