Shih Tzu are very sensitive dogs and known to be finicky eaters. You might try putting a little dog gravy on the dry food and see if that helps. She's trying to test you into giving her something else. These are very smart dogs and they know how to manipulate their people. They don't like to be left alone for long periods and begin showing behaviors like what you've described if they are not getting enough attention. The first thing I can suggest is that you speak to her vet and get his/her advice. You might also consider walking her to tire her out so she doesn't mind that you aren't spending time with her. Mine also starts getting hyper when she IS tired but as soon as we put her in her pen, she curls up and goes to sleep. So, it could also be that yours is overly tired and needs her own space away from distractions, as this type of dog is prone to be easily distracted.

Regarding the baby, you might want to introduce the dog to baby things now so she'll be used to those new scents (like diapers and baby shampoo/powder/lotion) and won't be thrown off as much when the baby arrives. I know people who've done that to great success. Your vet can also recommend other techniques that would work well.

Good luck and congrats on the little baby coming soon:)

P.S. - Regarding the shock collar recommendation, please consult with your vet before trying this. Shih Tzu tracheas are very close to the skin and that tends not to be a good option for this breed. Their throats are very delicate. My dog's vet did NOT approve of this training method for my Shih Tzu.

At one year old it is difficult for a inexperienced person to break a dog of bad habits- especially those dealing with dominance. Call your vet for a recommendation for obedience school. A trainer will work with you (usually in a small class once a week) and your pup. Most classes last about six weeks and can run from $100-200. The money will be well worth it tho! Just make sure that you do the exercises and training methods at home. Good luck!

1. The dog is in control, not you.
2. Get the dog on a schedule. Put her food down and if she doesn't eat in 10 or so minutes, take it away. A few days of this and she'll start to get on a schedule. You are the boss.
3. A shock collar will do wonders. Invest in a good one. Use it not only when the dog is barking or misbehaving, but also as an obedience training aid. i.e. When the dog needs to "come" apply stimulation with the collar until the dog starts to come. Use this with all commands. A doggy boot camp will also help.

Cradle him on your hands firmly. make positive that the shih tzu can not spoil out or pass inconsistently. Then utilizing your hand in simple terms carry the shih tzu's head gently at the same time as stroking him. Then in simple terms groom.

I am an experienced dog owner and would urge you to enroll your pup and yourself in some obedience classes. Go online and research NILF (nothing in life is free) and Clicker training and then find an instructor who teaches in the method that sounds more appealing to you. By the sound of it she is your first dog and it's only natural that you need to gain some experience yourself. If you get her into obedience you will see her behavior improve in all areas. I hope that helps!

ok I'm not by any means an expert but i have seen this work. My neighbor has a small yippy dog. And whenever it barke at him he just smacked him. Nothing that would do any damage but enough to make the dog aware that barking causes unpleasent consequences. And now the do no longer barks around him, but, it still barks the same in his absence.
