My cat often does the same. After much trial, we realized that she had a FUNGAL INFECTION OF SKIN at the base of her ears. It is recognizable when you move back her fur and see BLACK PATCHES on the skin below. Now whenever she does that, we apply either a preparation of Micanazole Nitrate or of Clotrimazole and as the black patches reduce, so does her discomfort and scratching...the only problem is that they keep coming back after a few weeks and we need to repeat the medication. No vet has yet been able to suggest a medicine which would cure this completely. If you come across one, tell me too please.

Is there any discharge from the ears?? If there is a reddish-blackish yeasty smell to the cats ears it could be a yeast infection. Get some Otomax from a vet if this is the case. Also, if the cat is bathed often try changing shampoos could be an allergic reaction, but probably not likely.

Hmm..Take it to the vet. If there is no yeast infection or mites...try changing her diet. (my cat had the same problem) It could be to rich (can food) so try slowly changing it to something dry. Science Diet works best. (it's what i use)
Remember, most dry food are meant for full diets. So, feeding it can food will be Way to much for your cat. (once in a while is okay)
Also, bathe the cat at least once a mth. (cats are quite clean, no need to bathe than every week k?
:) Make sure the cat is not allergic to it or something. This could also be the problem.

the only person who would be able to tell that would be a vet that has seen the cat. IT could be many things: fleas, a rash, mites, allergies, a skin disorder, ect. Only a vet can know for sure and treat it.

You might wanna tell your friend to take his cat to get a check up. It's probably nothing, but better safe than sorry. I'd guess it's some kind of skin condition.

could be mites (which are invisible to naked eye) on skin or fleas. also remember animals can have allergies to so that could be the culprit.
