It's good that you cut back. Yes cigarettes can get stale within a night after the package has been open. Like any tobacco the y need moisture to stay fresh. The refrigerator is a place to keep them.

I smoke about once a week for the past 15 years, whenever I'm out drinking, and one pack could last 3 weeks. I guess I'm not a true smoker, I can never tell when my cigarettes taste different.

Yes. They can go stale. Best thing to do is to put them in the freezer.

I keep mine in the freezer, and never had a problem with them going stale.

Yes, the tobacco dries out. If you store them in a plastic bag in the fridge, they will stay fresher longer.
