My dog disappeared at Owens River Gorge near Bishop, CA. She is a black 40 lb dog, 17 years old and deaf. She gets around very well but she is more clumsy than she used to be and had a stroke a few months ago (that she recover from well). I have searched everywhere for her but can find no sign of her. The area where she was lost is mostly, flat arid land with lots of very low shrubs but no trees, with some cliffs and gullies. I'm worried that she may have fallen down a cliff in a place where I can't see her. I am thinking about hiring a helicopter to search for her, but not sure if that will be effective since she is black and blends in with the rocks and shadows in the landscape. Does anyone have experience with search and rescue using a helicopter? Any ideas for how to better search in this kind of terrain? (I have already done all the usual with posting flyers, newspapers and radio announcements, contacting shelters, etc). Thanks!

I know how you feel. I got attached to my older sister's 6 month old puppy. She lives out in a ranch, surrounded by millions of rows of grape vineyards. One day, my sister and her husband had taken off for a couple of hours, and when they came back, the puppy was missing. He went missing on a Saturday evening. My heart sunk when I heard about this. On the following morning, I grabbed all my hiking gear, and went out searching for him for hours, hours, and hours. I got my family together to help search for him on foot, and with a 4x4 vehicle. On a Monday afternoon, I ventured out again to look for him, and lo and behold, there he was at a distance. We ran towards each other like as if we haven't seen each other in years. Get yourself a back pack. Pack it with plently of food, water, flashlight, first aid kit, basic camping supplies and get some friends/relatives to help you search for your dog. You won't be camping out there, but trust me, you'll be very happy that you went prepared. I know I have. When you have a good amount of supplies, you're able to go further, and for a longer period of time. No one will search as thoroughly as you will for your dog. This is the only way to do it, without having to spend a fortune on a Search and Rescue helicopter. They probably would not take your situation seriously anyway. Also, like someone had already mentioned here, it is difficult to spot a human from a helicopter, let alone a dog. I've personally flowned on a helicopter before, and I remember having a real hard time spotting people from above. You've done the right thing by letting the public know that you're dog is missing. I hope this was helpful, and I really do hope that you find your dog.

Umm, I don't know if anyone will be willing to go looking for a lost dog, unless you're ready to pay some serious cash. Search and rescue ops are usually reserved for human rescue. Not that I'm saying a dog isn't important, but it's not important to rescue crews.

I'm sorry you lost your dog! I don't think a helicopter can search for your dog without a pilot.

What about using another dog to search? Maybe a friends dog or a police dog,if possible.

If you can get heat-sensing equipment, that will be your best possibility. Obviously it's going to be tough searching for a black dog, but all warm-blooded creatures give off a heat signature.

Good luck in finding her.

It is difficult to spot a human in a variety of colored clothing, therefore spotting a black dog would be nearly impossible. I am sorry for what you are going through...I hope you find her.
