I have heard of some kind of thing you strap on your back with a weight on it that helps keep your back straight while working on your computer or a sewing machine etc. does anyone know where I could get one of these?

I haven't heard of such a thing, and really, it's not going to train you to have good posture anyway. At best, it's just going to make you uncomfortable in new and expensive ways. I think a better solution is to get a big inflatable exercise ball and sit on that. It will force you to work your core muscles without even thinking about it and you'll benefit from better posture. If sitting on the ball alone is too much of a challenge, you can get a base for it or make your own by rolling up a towel and giving the ball a nest to rest in.

"Torklugnu" has a good suggestion (previous post) on using an exercise ball as a chair. It does make you engage your muscles more, and sit upright. And, there is an additional benefit: you cannot sit on one for hours on end like you can a computer chair! You will feel the need to get up and move around a lot sooner, which is likely a big part of your problem.

You really should make sure your work station is a good fit for you as well. You can get tips on this from an Occupational or Physical Therapist.

If you are really interested in a brace, there is a brace called the "Posture S'Port" brace = this is a figure-eight brace with elastic bands that loop over your shoulders and cross in back. It doesn't really hold you upright, but if you start to slouch the elastic stretches and you feel it pulling on you. So, it just gives you a reminder. I get mine from OPTP.com

Good luck!
