Is it as bad as L.A.?

Oakland proper? Or the greater Bay Area?

Oakland proper is fine, except most freeways are snarled during commute hours, both directions.

The greater Bay Area is probably not as bad as L.A., except we have LOTS of places where the freeway is the ONLY option (notably, bridges) so there's no possibility of diverting onto surface roads to relieve congestion. Bridges and toll plazas are special knots of hell which L.A. does not have.

Also our carpool lanes are not at all like L.A. They're part-time, commute hours only. You can also enter or exit them anywhere you like. Most are 2 people=carpool, but I-80 and Bay Bridge are 3 people=carpool. Diamond lanes on bridges are BUSES ONLY - NO CARS, except carpools are allowed during commute hours only.

FasTrak works on the bridges, so it's useful to have for everyone, not just Orange County types.

Oakland has real bad traffic during rush hour and during games. I would say it is the same or worse than the 405 near the airport in LA.

I have been through both, and LA was WAAAAY worse than Oakland. From what I experienced. LA had traffic ALL the time.

almost...but since you're near bridges that go over water....well it's a much more harrowing experience, especially when it's raining and windy. The Golden Gate sways...wwwwhhhheeee...
