I'd just keep it casual. Say something like "hey, you going to the dance?" If he says yes act pleased, if he says no or says he's thinking about it teel him that he should go and it might be fun.

Bake him some cookies... that is what one of my friends did for a Sadie's dance. Or you could make a puzzle that fits together to make an invitation, and have him get one piece in each class, attached to a flower or piece of candy.
