On a 71 mustang the positive bolts to the solenoid and the negative bolts to the ENGINE BLOCK under the alternator . there should be a braided cable that bolts to the back of the intake to the firewall. A lot of the aftermarket batery cables have a short 10 gague wire built in that should be spliced into a ground to the inner fender .

On every car I've ever worked on the negative cable was always bolted to a rust-free, paint-free spot on the frame.

Red is positive and to the solenoid.
Black is negative and is grounded to the frame.
All American cars have a negative ground. At least to my knowledge.
