Some people go to church/temple/etc in an attempt to grow closer to their religion, or bc it gives them a sense of community. Churchgoing, volunteering, living a moral life...no single one of those factors is a direct reflection of one's relationship w/ God.
That is why so many people are able to have a deep relationship with God, but choose no affiliation with a church. Because they know the difference between and that so many people at churches talk the talk, but don't walk the walk.
God is everywhere, not just in churches. If you worship in a more personal way, that doesn't mean you are more or less devout; it just means that when you choose to talk to God is when you're alone, and that where you choose to talk to God is at your home, outdoors, etc. Church is wherever you make it.

The Bible states that "all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God." Christians are not perfect, just forgiven.

no fear of the Lord.
They manipulate Scripture to justify their behavior, be good on Sunday, and play in the mud the other days.
Since there is no fear of the Lord, they don't understand judgment is just outside the door.

(secret: there is no hell, but don't tell anyone you don't like.)
