Bacteria usually form colonies that may have specialized functions. There's usually a certain number that are a minimum for functioning. For example when I worked with Pseudomonads they seemed to need at least 25 organisms to survive. They are formed by the individual bacteria dividing in two and then the 2 become 4 then 8 .... just as you figure out your computer binary tables. The only bacteria I'm aware of that can infect with one organism is the TB germ which can even live on soap. That's a reason that liquid disinfectants containing alcohols are used by health workers.
