A lot of people have this problem myself included. Basically its all about doing it often enough that you dont really care that people are in front of you. Have you taken a speech class? I would say that almost everyone is terrified of getting up and speaking always keep that in mind. Being really prepared before speaking is also a good thing. Yea as I sit here and think of other ways all i can think of is you have to put yourself before the firing squad enough times. good luck

I totally understand. I used to be extremely nervous speaking in frontof crowds. Not only was I nervous about messing up, but then I'd get nervous about becoming so nervous.

I think a couple things helped me. One was shear practice. The more I forced myself up there, the less worried I was each time.

Another thing is finding subject matter I was confident in. In high school, you have to give speeches on Shakespeare's thoughts on democracy or Napolean's best friend's favorite color, but in college and after, you have more options about what you talk about. If you're speaking about something you're knowledgable about anbd interested in, it'll be easier.

Last suggestion, breathe...

Just about everyone has this problem at first. Confidence comes with facing what you fear and doing it repeatedly. Try joining Toastmasters International; they train you by easy stages and well. You can find them in the business section of the phone-book or the yellow pages; or go to www. toastmasters.org.

Sometimes I have those days when I do nothing but stutter when I talk. practice in front of the mirror. chat to your image, praise its outfit, whatever. If you're talking about actual speeches or presentations, plan out a nice, systematic speech, write out neat and organized note cards if required, and practice in front of that faithful mirror!

I was bad at public speaking. Nobody really likes it. Make your audience laugh. Get a couple great jokes, and if their relevant to the subject, go with it. I did a bit about morse code, and I had a soundbite of morse code. I told the class that what they heard was a translation for "Morse code is completely worthless." I got a good laugh, and it made the rest of it go smoothly. Also, you gotta be able to laugh at yourself.

I would say you have Social Phobia and this is very common, curable but it takes time and effort. Basecly try not to keep yourself away from social events, specially those which scares you - practice them and eventually fear will disapear.

See this site, it might help you along the way...
