My cat just had kittens over a week ago. their eyes just opened up. The mom cat is very affectionate and loving, but one of her kittens keep hissing when I pick it up. We havent handled this litter very much, in fact ive stayed away from them until just recently because the last litter died suddenly and we dont know why, so we are trying to be extra careful with this one. The last litter did not act this way so im concerned that they are going to continue this behavior and make awful pets. Is this normal??? Any tips on how to stop it of is this a taste of things yet to come??

Though the kittens eyes have opened, they are still covered with a blue film and won't be able to see until this film disappears. The kitten is dependent on scent, as it scents its mother when she is near. It is normal for a kitten of that size to hiss at anything that comes near it or at you when you pick it up because it is not familiar with your scent. Its just part of nature and once they are able to see, they more than likely won't hiss anymore at you.

It is very normal for kittens to hiss when they are still little. They will outgrow it the more that they get used to you. This is their normal defense system kicking in and trying to protect themselves from harm. Hissing is about their only defense at this age. Imagine you getting picked up by something that you had never seen before that is so much larger than you. You would more than hiss too

some times hissing means they are in pain. can you tell if this kitten is in pain.? does it just hiss when you pick it up? maybe it has a hurt when you pick it up? or none of the above and its just a kitten that is hissing. and will stop this when the kitty get s to know you.

Most kittens hiss when confronted with something they do not know yet... as they get accustomed to you and realize you mean them no harm, the hissing will stop. Don't worry about it. They are sooo cute when they hiss, aren't they?

Yep, totally normal! Don't worry about it, it's their little self defense mechanism kicking in...cute when they are so fierce huh?
