in a city like san francisco, can you connect with someone a few miles away, for at least a few minutes?

Is one brand better than another?

Wel for what we needed them for it worked very well. We have Radio Shack up to 1 mile range..Two channel Personal Radio, compact, and they did not cost all that much.Sad to say my father had a stroke and can't say,but I think they were about $49.00 or so.
They worked well for my husband and myself driving 2 different cars on an 8 hour trip.In case something happened to the junker he was driving.....It didn't but these walkie talkies did the job we needed them to.

It all depends. Some walkie talkies are made to be able to connect from a far distance while others are made for very short distances. And in a big city I'm guessing there would probably be some kind of interference, too, shortening the distance(but like I said I'm only guessing).

Some cell phone plans have the walkie talkie mode that uses boosters to allow people to talk to each other while they are miles apart. A stand alone walkie talkie in that environment would probably allow you to talk a quarter mile away.
