As for your parents not wanting you to join up, a quick story:
A girl I had in my Sunday school class when she was in elementary school always wanted to join the U.S. Marines. She and I were close all through her school years and I attended many of her sports and other school events. Her parents (dad in particular) were dead set against her joining the U.S. Marines. She joined and I was on a job just a few miles south of her boot camp and wrangled an invitation to her graduation. When her company passed in review, her mom, dad and I all had tears of pride streaming down our face. Once she put on the Eagle, Globe and Anchor, her dad was so proud he about busted his shirt buttons!
After that it was, MY DAUGHTER THE MARINE. He was a Marine...no such thing as EX-Marine before he was a civilian.
He worked as a school bus mechanic and not surprisingly she went on to be a heavy machinery mechanic for her 4 years on the Corps. She met another Marine, married and now has a beautiful little girl. She and her hubby got out of the U.S. Marines.
So, when you turn 18 and still want to join up, go ahead. I'm sure your parents WILL be very proud of their "little girl."
God bless you!

It is not what "they" want that matters. It's your want girl. If that is what you want, go for it. Just finish HS with the best grades you can make and be physically fit. It does however require a parental consent at age of 17. I joined the AF at the age of 16, however was 17 when entering basic training. I was small for a male, 5'-7" weighing 132 lbs. Had no trouble what so ever. Grew an inch and gained 20 lbs in basic.
Enjoyed ever minute I was in the AF.
Take a look at the AF instead of the Army, you will not regret it. Smile. Kind of prejudiced that way, Smile.

Talk to your Air Force recruiter. And he will give you the facts and a few lies. But he will tell you up front of you are too short. I bet you are not. Unless you are under 4 '. That may be too short. You need to be 18 or 17 and a high school graduate, well you need the diploma no matter what. If you are 17 your folks will have to sign for you to go.

I am a Recruiter for the Idaho Army National Guard. If you do not meet the intitial entry height standards, odds are your Recruiter can get a waiver approved for you. It all depends on how short you are. I was able to get a girl in the military who was only 4' 11" tall. Don't listen to people who tell you that you can't do something. www.1800goguard.com

Listen, don't let anyone tell you different. You can do what you want. There is a height requirement in the military but that apply with weight standards too. If I was you, I would ask everyone who is in the Army (perphaps the same MOS as you want to be) and ask them how it is like. Trust me on this, the recruiter WILL LIE to you. They did to me and I'm still trapped for another 3 years from a 6 year contract.

First, the height won't be a problem. I've been in the army for over 4 years now and I've seen females as short as 4'8".
The parents are going to be a problem, especially since you're 17 and you need them to sign a waiver. If you're really serious, wait til you're 18 and then see how you and your parents really feel.

As a parent I understand how your parents feel, if when you turn 18 you still want to join the military why not compromise with them by going in to the Coast Guard or the Navy, this way at least you won't be putting yourself directly in harm's way.

I don't believe the military has height restrictions anymore...why don't you go and talk to your local recruiter and ask... if you want to join the military you should, I spent five years in and never regretted it for one minute, my husband is still in and will probably retire...the Army has been good to us, don't listen to the negativity, do what is best for you! I think you can even go to www.goarmy.com and chat w/soldiers and recruiters live and ask all sorts of questions. Good Luck!

Tunnel rats were men. You dont have females on the front lines?
Female soldiers dont dont go out on search and destroy missions, or would ever have to clear a tunnel.
Bad intel there!
But how small are you?
You can look at Army website to see if theres a height limit.

Don't listen to what civilians say. Talk to a recruiter. People of small stature were particularly valuable as "tunnel rats" in Vietnam, and as ball turret gunners during World War II. I'm sure they'll find a place for you in today's Army.
