There products smell so nice and although they are expensive you dont have to use much so they last ages. Also i have quite sensitive skin and alot of products irritate my skin but molton browns stuff doesnt. They also package everything up so nice.

They have a day spa near me that i'd love to go to but that is expensive! bet it'd be worth it tho!

Molton Brown started its life in a spa. Because at the time, spa was THE ultimate in self pampering! Luxurious hand lotion and hand wash were not widely available, though expensive, Molton Brown hand lotion and gel were affordable luxuries.
It's popular because using it would associate you with wealth, beauty and luxury (well for some anyway). But the real reasons are, it smells nice, effective marketing and hype generated by its users - mainly women (its' target consumers). If you look carefully at the list of ingredients there are nothing on the list that are unique nor expensive so it does not justify the price. So, it all comes down to the brand, smell, marketing and packaging. To answer your question? The users/consumers made it popular.

I love the Molton Brown shop in Covent Garden. I just love the shape of the bottles and how glamorous they look in the bathroom. The hand-soaps leave your hands smelling wonderful and you can refill them with your own liquid soap if you can't afford a refill.

Because their products smell lovely and last for ages, and your skin always feels better after using it.
