I use an older model Canon A510.
It's 3.2 megapixels... it's perfect for 4X6's... which I'm mainly interested in.

You need more megapixels for larger prints.. Don't overbuy
if you just want 4X6 prints...

The answer depends on whether you're going to print large
posters of your pictures, say 8 X 10 or larger.
Most point and shooters these days come with about 4.0 mps+, which provides great picture quality and value for the dollar if you're only going to upload to computer for sharing with family and friends. On the other hand, if you happen to take a photo worth of a Pulitzer, you will need as much megapixels as you can afford.

Canon Powershot series is particularly very good.
Canon's control and menu navigation is intuitive, and the
cameras come with great photo editing softwares, free.

Remember that more megapixels doesn't really mean that you can take better quality pictures. I know a lot of serious amateurs who spend thousands of dollars on SLRs that have 10+ megapixels, but their work quality isn't guaranteed.

4 megapixels is fine. In general go with 5 or 6. For MOST photographers no need to go beyond 6 and get caught up in the megapixel hype.

I would recommond at least a 6MP camera. Its a sweet spot among point and shoot cameras but of course you can go higher than that but if you dont need anything larger than 8X10 prints then the 6MP will be fine for general purpose shots. I would recommond the A640 if you have money to spend and dont need a small compact camera, for a small compact camera I would recommond the SD800IS if you have no limit or the SD700 or even the SD600 if you are on a limit but all of these cameras are great.
