Don't send anything homemade...it's hot over there and the stuff tends to get NASTY really quick! Anything prepackaged is great, and they suggest keeping boxes around shoe box size...so instead of sending one HUGE care package send a bunch of little ones...every couple of weeks... anything from home is ALWAYS appreciated!

Beef jerky is always a good idea. SlimJims and Twizzlers are everywhere (at least for me - I'm currently in Iraq). As of right now, it's not hot, so chocolate would survive the trip. Depending on the FOB he is going to be assigned to, he may have ready access to everything he needs. The PX's are for the most part stocked with all sorts of extras. Best thing I could recomend is to ask him what he needs after he's been here for a little while. We tend to have shortages of shaving cream & shampoo,so that's always nice.... Be carefull about the IPod though - we have been having packages arriving with the important contents missing. Insure the package if at all possible.

The generals think that they can do the job without that many people. Which is a good thing, because there are not that many more people to send. Which is a bad thing, because if we need to do something in Iran or North Korea, we don't have the people to do it. We have a choice in Iraq: we can win, or we can lose. If we lose, can you imagine what the Taliban and al Qaeda will do in Iraq? al Qaeda has been saying all along that the American people don't have the stomach for a long war, and that they can win by outlasting us. It appears that they are right.

When I was in Iraq, my mom sent me plenty of snacks, sunblock, insect repellent, wet wipes, baby powder, video games, DVDs, and newspapers. The best thing was snacks. She sent a lot so I could share with my fellow soldiers. The sunblock and bug repellent helped a lot but He wont need that till around April. He can get a lot of basic supplies from the PX stores on bases in Iraq, but having some toiletries when you already get is great because the lines get long and sometimes supplies are low. I hope this helps a little. I wish you the best.

Biggest thing is baby wipes. Sand gets everywhere and into anything in Iraq and baby wipes work wonders. Glad bags of all sizes are also good cus he can put things in there and during sandstorms he'll be grateful. Anything non-perishable such as ramen noodle soup and candy and gum and stuff like that. Magazines, DVDs and video games will be great. Last thing I can think of is anything from Underarmour and gold bond powder for when summer strikes. If you need anymore ideas, don't hesitiate to ask.

From what I know things like drink mixes are helpful and comforting. Things that you just add to water like gatorade powder and kool aid with sugar in the mix are good ones.
Other random things
Wet wipes
Lotion
Candy (no chocolate)
Gum
Cereal Bars
Single serving food like soups or macaroni
Sunscreen
Chapstick
Foot Powder
Cd's
DVD's
Magazines
Books
Frisbee
Softball and mitt (easy outdoor activities)
Best wishes to you and your son.

A few good paper back books, maybe some, writting paper and pens, envelops and stamps. I had a very hard time finding stamps when I was in the military from time to time. Maybe some hard candy, gum. NO candy bars.
