I've seen many instances when someone is put in prison longer for stealing than killing.

Isn't killing way more condemnable than stealing?

Is the government sending a message that there is a price to human life?

It depends on what state but you are absolutely correct.... murder is much worse than stealing. I too have seen murderers get out in 6 years and an armed robber do 10 even though he never used the weapon.

It depends on the circumstances of the killing. Someone who beats their wife to death has done something much disgusting than someone who kills someone else in a car accident.

I'd put an armed robber in jail for longer than someone who kills another person accidently. The robber is a much greater danger to society.

Plus people who steal tend to have long criminal records. That doesn't help their case either.

So overall it depends on the circumstances of each crime.

That is so true! OR at least it seems to be. Right now in my local county jail we have an 18 year old male doing time on multiple 1rst degree assault charges, a 2ND degree murder charge, an eluding charge. You want to know how much time he got? A total of 8 months!

Murderers must be meted more severe penalty because death of a person is more grave than theft.
