To answer your first question. Yes you can have the dog groomed into what is commonly refered to as a 'puppy cut' and yes it does help make the dog look younger again.

Your second question, I think I will let alone. Only because in my home if my children bug on me to get another animal, the answer is generally a resounding No, only time it would not be a No answer is if I am prepared to take on the care and training of another pet. If I'm not prepared to take on that which invaribly my children will let go due to other interests, then I am not going to put an animals life on the balance just because my child says he will take care of it and such.

For your first question -
Small dogs can get hair cuts called "puppy cuts" It is just trimming the hair to match what they looked like when they were younger.

Second question -
My honest opinion is to let it go. Honestly, I have 3 children and the thing I can not stand the most is when they try to convince me of something. I happen to be a dog lover and have 2 but not all people are dog lovers. Maybe there is something that doesn't poop and eat that you can focus you attention on?

Of you are really set on getting a dog then let me ask you this?
Are you ready for:

Two feedings a day?
At least 3-4 walks a week, on a leash no matter the weather?
Picking up the poop and bringing it home
If you are not old enough to walk the dog at night who will?
Making sure there is always water in the bowl?
When you want to sleep over at a friends who will care for it?
Cleaning dog poop up in the yard?
Cleaning the ears, grooming, vet visits, shots?
What about potty training a puppy - you have to go out like every hour?
What about when the new puppy cries all night long in the cage?

There is so much to it. If you still think you are ready - then the question is are your parents?

What does Mom think? If both parents are not interested then you might have a harder time. What about adopting a dog from a shelter? Or adopting from a maltese rescue group? This way there is probably not going to be any potty training or puppy chewing. The dog will already have shots and worming and maybe even be fixed, that would save a lot of money. This might make it seem a little more affordable then spending hundreds of dollars on a puppy. Also these dogs are in desperate need of a home - maybe your parents have a soft spot for the needy or the under dog so to speak! Get information about the exact dog you are interested in and have a back up plan. If you really like maltese find out how much it would cost to board the dog for a week if you went on vacation. Find out about the breeds temperment, find out how much a groomer costs to trim the hair and how often you would have to go. Find a vet and how much the office visit and yearly shots will cost. Present a clear case. Remember that these dogs need homes FOREVER. It is extremely traumatizing for dogs to bounce from home to home. Good luck.

I don't think I can help you with question number 1. I don't have a maltese, so I don't know much about grooming them.

Question #2 ... I know what he is talking about ... you can continue to travel, but every time you leave the house for an overnight trip you will need to board the dog at a kennel, or arrange with a pet sitter to walk him several times a day, OR GET A NEIGHBOR OR A FRIEND TO TAKE CARE OF HIM. Yes, there are lots of things to buy, like dog food, and toys and leashes. You could offer to help pay for them out of your allowance, or do chores in exchange. Most dogs do not need a lot of surgery ... you will probably want to have the dog sterilized (neutered) so that there will be no puppies, but that isn't all that expensive. And there is now insurance that you can get to help pay for the cost of vets and any surgery that comes along.

The big thing is to convince your dad that you will help with the care and some of the expenses.

My parents didn't want a dog, but my brother brought one home with him when he was delivering papers. They let us keep him when we agreed to help with the chores and expenses.

Good luck

Not so sure about question one but i'd say even if you cut it it wouldn't look so great. It would probably look worse.
For question 2. You need to save up. I want a dog too. A good idea is for your birthday tell your friends and family to give you money instead of actual gifts. With the surgery I'd say get pet insurance it can save you heaps on vet bills but it depends how active your dog is because if it's a placid dog it probably isn't going to get cut by glass or stuff that boisterous dogs do so you need to think about that. As for the cost of grooming, well you can save a lot of money by grooming the dog yourself but when the dog's coat needs to be cut just find a cheap groomer to give him a trim. Look in the yellow pages as there are so many grooming services and just keeping phoning up till you find some-one who'll trim your dogs coat for a cheap price but still does a good job.

So that you don't buy lots of toys try and make your own but look at special websites don't just do it on your own as you could make something that harms your dog. Also buy the tough toys as they can't be chewed up as easily so you don't fork out on new toys each week. Also do not give your dog shoes or socks as toys because they can't tell the difference between your old socks and your brand new high heels.

Just look around until you find the cheapest bed, leash and collar, etc but make sure they are still of good quality. You could also try ebay if you're allowed.

For food I reccomend Super coat as it's better than eukanuba but you can find it in your local supermarket so it's cheaper but stilll healthy.

For treats look at some dog websites and make your own with food that you have around the house so you don't pay for lots of treats.
Hope this all helps!

Owning a dog is a life time commitment for that dog, are you prepared to look after it that long and can you afford the routine vet checks, and can you afford to have the dog boarded when you travel or can you take it with you? The dog will be there for many many years its not just a novelty. You might have to convince your dad yourself that you can handle it and take full responsibilty for it.

I would suggest waiting until your dad doesnt have a say in the decision. Thats how dogs get dumped when the kids grow up and move...you may not be able to care for it later on.

kept clipped, a maltese is adorable, very much like when it was a pup.
perhaps you could sway your dad by offering to pay 1/2 or going to a breed specific rescue!
don't forget shots, feeding and grooming can be $$$$!
