My 3 month old Papillon puppy has had a cough since I got him. The breeder provided me with clavanox medicine for this. He will be going to the vet on thursday. I was just wondering if anyone has any idea what his issue may be.

He seems to only have coughing attacks when he is resting- like right before he goes to sleep or when he is woken up. Very rarely throughout the day, he may have an attack but not frequently at all. He does not seem to be struggling to breathe at all, it's just kind of like when a person gets a scratchy throat and can't stop coughing. It lasts a minute or two.

I really can't imagine that it is a significant problem since it only affects him at certain times. Does anyone have any idea what his problem may be? (the breeder said it was just a cold, nothing to worry about- but that's kind of what I would expect her to say.)

It could be as simple as a upper respiratory infection or as serious as pneumonia. Has your puppy been vaccinated? A viral disease called Distemper usually affects the respiratory system first before causing neurologic signs and death. It could also be a birth defect like a collapsing trachea or hypoplastic trachea -- these conditions are seen in Papillons. Defiinitely get some xrays done if the cough is not resolving or getting worse.

don't know all of what are the symptoms of Kennel Cough, but I would have it checked. He may also be allergic to something in your house and it only effects him when he is close to it. Good luck at the vets
