I think you can buy as little or as much as you want. We have alphabet flash cards, but you could make your own or print some off the computer. I think the best idea is just to work lessons into everyday life without them seeming like "teaching." Sing the alphabet song a few times each day, point out letters and words on magazines and in books. Teach him about different monetary denominations by pretending to buy things from each other around the house.

I am going through the exact same thing right now. I asked my neighbors and stuff because they just put their son in KG? They said He had to know how to write his name, his colors, his shapes, ABC's, 123's, plus they said they thought him how to use a computer. So if you work with him on the computer you know like introduce him to it. teach him the letters. Have him spell his name , and count to 10 or 20 on the computer. He also needs to be used to being with other kids. Set up some play dates with kids his own age. You know kids that would be in his class when he goes to school. Find out if your town has like a kids play gym or you could even go to park so he could meet kids. It would help the him adjust to being in school if he had friends already there. That way he won't be scared if you drop him off with people he doesn't know.

There's really not too much to buy, since the learning can be done all around him. But if you are looking for some props to help out, they sell flash cards with letters and colors on them. Or you can go to a book store and they have workbooks that are age and grade related. I use both of these with my own daughter, but I also try to find opportunities in our daily routine to teach her. For example while getting her dressed we talk about the colors she wearing, we count out her dry cereal, we sing ABC's etc.

The best advise i have for you is send him to a preschool. They offer so many things you cannot introduce him to. Even if it is only 2 or 3 days a week it would really benefit him and i doesn't have to be the whole day he could just go from like 9-noon. The interaction with other children is a big thing he needs at that age. The things you are doing with him are great.

All that I can say is READ, READ, READ. Not only to your son, but let him see you do it. Just talk about what you see in the world around you. Five red strawberries for a snack, two blue cars driving by, the yellow banana starts with "B". That sort of thing. Kindergarten is also a lot about social interaction and learning to follow a routine. Try to make sure that he is playing with lots of other kids whenever possible. Also, start and stick to a schedule if you don't already have one.

I don't know what to say...As soon as our boys were old enough to talk we were teaching them their colors, numbers & letters.
What my husband & I did was while we were playing with them, coloring, etc. we would say something like, isn't this a pretty blue? etc.
We would make their names in letters that could be colored, we had alphabet blocks, etc.
The best thing is just a lot of interaction with your son. When you pick up a car say the color. get picture flash cards. Make up those sheets of letters or get a book of those letters like we traced in school to help him learn his letters. Just use your imagination & spend a lot of time with him. You don't have to "try" to teach him, it's just everyday things you do that you emphasize. Does that make ANY sense? Keep it fun & don't push. Make it a type of game. Good Luck...

Go to like a Barns and Nobles, B. Daltons, or whatever big bookstore you have, and take a look at the homeschooling materials. Whether you buy anything there or not, just by looking at the books, you will get a ton of ideas.

Most kindergartners need a bookbag, scissors, fat pencils, crayons a paint cup and a box of tissues..I wouldn't buy anything this soon cuz you will get a list either at an open house or he will bring one home the first day or two of school.
