When this woman first asked me to watch her preschool-age daughter, she told me she hadn't been able to get a sitter--but the problem is, she's never been able to find one. I'm fine with helping out in an emergency--but I don't want to keep doing it on a regular basis.

I'm especially interested in hearing from some moms on the subject....

I think that if you tell her just what you typed here, it will suffice. You are allowed to say no on occassion, you are not indebted to this woman to be her on call sitter. Let her know that you will only fill in on emergencies, no more, no less. It seems that she has hoodwinked you into being her sitter, more than likely she has stopped looking. If you feel that she is taking advantage of you, stop her cold in her tracks and tell her no more, after a certain date, she will have to find a sitter, there is not a legal date in which you must give her, it could be today, tomorrow, or never, it is your decision.

Your best bet is to be honest. I've been in the same situation and the mother reacted sweetly. It better to tell the truth because if she finds out your were making up an answer then she will be insulted.

Just tell her that you can't baby sit for her on a regular basis, but if she needs help or cannot find someone else to give you a call. Another thing you can do is suggest names of friends who you know babysit adn would get along well with her child. Make sure you talk to your friends though before recommending them.

Try telling the woman that your life has become very busy. You may not be able to find the time to help her any longer. Give her a time limit that you are willing to keep. Say I can help you for the next week but then I can not do it any longer.

Tell her that you are willing to help out in an emergency, but it was never your intention to be a full-time sitter. Honesty is the best policy.

Just be honest with her and tell her that you can't so she can work on finding someone else. That was nice of you to babysit when she didn't have anyone else.

I have decided not to babysit regularly anymore, but if you need someone in a pinch I may be available.

The best way is just straight forward just the way you explained it in your question on "Answers."
