I live in an area of average car crimes either by opportunist, "joy riders" or professional criminals. Thinking of my forthcomming car purchase with a modest budget wondered which is the best to get purely on a security basis. Thanks for your help/advice

Any car with a hidden, not in some common location, starter kill switch is secure from car theft. I have a 1995 Firebird that came with PassKey II. After a while one of the wires leading to the contacts to the key started shorting out. I found where the wire connect going up the steering column. I disconnected the connector and installed the correct sized resistor and a toggle switch that can't be easily seen. I can now kill the starter at will.

Go for a car with deadlocks, this means that it is impossible to open the door without a key even if the windows are smashed. Also because of this the engine can NOT be hot wired. Most of the new vauxhall range have this feature.

One with a good electic supply, preferably zapping through the would be thief. it's shame you have to drive with security in mind instead of comfort.. good luck but I'd get my r'se out of there damned quick.

Joyriders usually only steal cars with a bit of go in them, so buy an under-powered piece of crap, with a nice body.
