The most important thing is that you are comfortable. You can sit or lay down. Make sure you are warm enough and safe. The best way is to let go of all the thoughts and images in your mind. Try to not think. It is not that easy. Sometimes deep breathing can help. Also try touching the tip of your tounge to the roof of your mouth. This can help to quiet the mind.

Position won't help. But the state of mind with which you begin helps a lot. Think of something that makes you feel happy, light and pure (it could be your parents / childhood friends e.t.c). Then start meditating. Start from there....

There are many meditation techniques and positions. Experiment with them and you will find one that works best for you. Discipline is more important than position in my experience.
