Sweetie,i like a basic mashed patato.Boil the patatoes(i prefer red skinned, they seem to have a buttery flavor).I do not like the whole electric mixer thing either,i like to mash mine with a hand held old fashioned patato masher.Add a little heavy cream,a tablespoon or two of butter, maybe some fresh herbs(parsley, chives or thyme).
Nothing beats patato cake with left over mashed patatoes(Whole reason for not adding sour cream). To do that simply take your left over mashed patatoes, add some flour(i use self rising),some egg substitute(or an egg),salt, pepper and some grated onion.Fry in some canola or vegetable oil.I normally do not use anything other than extra virgin olive oil, however in this case i go a little further because i dont make them often. You should try it sometime.Good luck hun and have a good night.

- Roasted Garlic Mashed Potatoes

prep time
10 minutes

serves 4
1 pound (about 2 large) Potatoes, peeled and quartered
2 cup Skim Milk
2 large cloves Garlic, chopped
1/2 teaspoon White Pepper

Cook potatoes, covered, in a small amount of boiling water
for 20-25 minutes or until tender. Remove from heat. Drain
and recover.

Meanwhile, in a small saucepan over low heat, cook garlic
in milk until garlic is soft, about 30 minutes.

Add milk-garlic mixture and white pepper to potatoes. Beat
with an electric mixer on low speed or mash with a potato
masher until smooth

I peel my potatoes then boil until soft. Then I mash them up with a hunk of butter, salt, and some milk. Then I make some brown gravy to go on top. Now I want some mashed taters!

Best way I've ever found:
Bake the potatoes. Once they cool, peel them, cut into large chunks and squeeze through a potato ricer. Add a bit of buttermilk, a bit of butter, maybe some grated parmesan and salt/pepper. The ricer makes them SO light and fluffy.
If I'm in a hurry, I peel then boil the potatoes, then rice them.

Boil as usual.

In a fry pan - fry some bacon til really crispy.

Mix into mashed potatoes with a hand ful of chopped spring onions, and parmasen cheese!

So naughty, but so nice!

I boil the potatos, peeling first. I cut them in chuncks. When done, I drain the water, mash, mixing salt, pepper, little milk, and sour cream. They are really good.

Boil them, drain them, mash them up, add cream, pepper, and salt... That's how my mom does them... they taste really good that way... I think she might have butter in there too! So if you ever decide to try it, and it doesn't taste very good, try adding some butter!
Have a great day...

steam the potatoes until they are really soft and use a hand mixer to mix them with real butter, salt and pepper. Steaming keeps them from absorbing too much water so you can make them REALLY buttery without making them thin and runny.
