Safe mode IS NOT SAFE!
It is safe for the Windows program, NOT YOU!
Safe mode only loads the minimum drivers that windows needs to run, so if you have a bad program, you can delete it in safe mode, because it cannot start.
Always run your machine normally, with a virus program running, it is 100% better than risking running it with NOTHING!

Press F8 on startup and select safe mode from the list. It's used for booting your computer and changing settings when a normal startup is impossible due to an error or other discrepancy, such as driver conflicts. As for defraging hard drives, it is generally not as necessary now as it used to be in the days of windows 95, since the NTFS filesystem (your drive probably has it if you are running Windows 2000 or XP) performance is not affected much, if at all, by a fragmented volume. FAT32 (Used by a later revision of Win 95, by Win 98 and 98 SE, and ME. If you have the initial retail release of Windows 95, then your drive uses FAT16) on the other hand, can use a good defragmenting every once in a while to keep its performance up.

Safe mode is a diagonistic mode in which no additional drivers would be loaded and no additional startup programm would be allowed to run. This mode is used when some drivers or startup program are corrupt and your computer does not boot properly.
Besides least amount of memory and files are used .Therefore it is a good practice to use safe mode when you defrag.

Safe mode is just to run your computer when you are doing things that might crash your computer. It is usually used by admins and changing many computers at once. don't worry about it if you are a personal user. Doesn't do you any good.

you only need safe mode if you get a virus ,It allows your computer to start with only the barebones programs running, so that you can get in and fix what is wrong with it safely
