It seems like there are so many ways that it could go wrong (like soap in the eye, contact down the drain etc.)

When I shower in my contacts, they usually get that feeling of sticking to my eyes when I get out. My mom has the same thing happen to her. I usually just put drops in my eyes after that. It won't hurt you though, but it may be less of a hassle to just take them out before you take a shower.

I wear my contacts in the shower all the time. If they get sticky, DON'T PUT THEM IN YOUR MOUTH! A lot of people do that and that is a huge mistake.

I've had contacts for quite some time and they always stay put in my eyes till I take them out.

Yes, just don't let the water spray into your eyes. Most people don't like that sensation anyway and instinctively avoid it.
