By the way it sounds, you are a first time mom?! I went through the same thing with my first. I think all mothers do. No, I never used the infant respiratory monitors. Don;t live in fear, because you'll regret that. You just have to believe everything will be okay. There are so many things you can do to lower the risk of SIDS. The rikiest time is between one month and one year. I have known it to happen to older kids, but not that often. If you smoke, go outside so your not around the baby and wear a coat so when you pick up the baby, he/she is not smelling the smoke and wear gloves. Wash your hands evrytime you pick up the baby.
ALWAYS place your baby on its back to sleep, until they can roll over on their own, they they usually decide how to sleep, regardless of how you put them. It is safest for baby to sleep in a crib. Yes, I do know people who have lost their babies to SIDS and more recently, my best friend had a still born son. The thing is, there is no real answer as to why this happens. It is sad, it is tragic, but it is not something that should consume your life as it you are not walking in their shoes. Your son is healthy and has a responsible and loving mother who meets his needs. You should be enjoying this time.

I think you need some counselling to help you get over this fear before it ruins your life and impacts on your childs life. My friends will never recover from their losses, but they seem to have found the strength to get back and enjoy life. May we never fully understand their pain.

The riskiest time for SIDS is 2 to 4 mo. The rates spike right after thier first set of shots.

The best thing you can do to prevent SIDS is to breastfeed and to co-sleep (either in your bed, or right next to it).

A friend of mine's child succumbed to sids. It was during the "don't put your baby to sleep on it's tummy" scare. So she didn't put the child to sleep on his tummy, she always put him to sleep on his back, would make it a point to go in and put him on his back if he was on his tummy...one night she went in and apparently he had vomited in his sleep and aspirated on the vomit...the doctor said if he had been on his tummy he wouldn't have died...

I'm sorry you are living in such fear. I really don't know how coming here and asking such a question is going to put your fears to rest.

What you are feeling is part of being a mom........welcome to motherhood.
