this wednesday, the 21st. you may also wish to take something up,lent doesn't always have to be giving something up,lent is a time for new starts and drawing closer to christ than you may already be. some ideas may be to study the word more,be more active in helping the sick, elderly or all people for that matter,go to church more, conffess regularly etc............good luck on what you are giving up and may god bless you.

Lent starts on Ash Wednesday, lasts 40 days not counting Sundays and ends on Holy Saturday, the day before Easter.

In 2007, Ash Wednesday will fall on February 21 and Easter on April 8.

Yes, this year it starts on February 6th, but that's because it happens to be Ash Wednesday. Lent starts on Ash Wednesday, which is 40 days before Easter. The date of Easter is the first Sunday after the first full moon after the first day of spring. This year, it's about as early as it can possibly be, because there's a full moon right after the vernal equinox, so Lent is pretty early this year. Lent isn't determined by Mardi Gras. Mardi Gras is always the day before Lent. Mardi Gras means "Fat Tuesday." Traditionally, you were supposed to use up all your "fat," i.e. lard and grease for frying, before lent.

I don't know what day/time it is where you are (whether it is Tuesday or Wednesday where you are right now) but Lent starts on Wednesday, 21st February this year. That's today for me (I'm in England, possibly a few hours ahead of you) - Wednesday might be tomorrow for you.

In Western Christianity, Lent is the period (or season) from Ash Wednesday to Holy Saturday. In Eastern Christianity, the period before Easter is known as Great Lent to distinguish it from the Winter Lent, or Advent (known in Greek as the "Great Fast" and "Nativity Fast", respectively). This article tends to discuss Lent as understood and practiced in Western Christianity.

Tomorrow, Wednesday. It is know by some as "Ash Wednesday". ("Mordi Gras", or "Carnaval", means the feast of fat, of meat, or of the flesh, the last day to cater to your carnal nature before Lent starts. A horrible idea, isn't it?)
