If this is your first professional massage, your best bet is the Swedish method. It is excellent for stress reduction and can also be very effective in alleviating muscular aches and pains when skillfully and properly administered.

Be sure to inform the massage therapist if it's your first session. Let him/her know if you require less or more pressure during the massage. It is normal to experience some slight discomfort if your muscles are knotted and tight. If you begin to tense up, an experienced, sensitive, and proficient therapist will automatically ease up, but do not ever hesitate to inform your therapist if something, i.e, the pressure, room temperature, music, oil, etc. is not to your satisfaction.

Avoid eating a full meal for 2 1/2 to 3 hours before the session. This is important as it will ensure proper digestion and allow you to experience an enjoyable massage. Remember to drink plenty of water (don't drown your kidneys, though) for 24-48 hours after your session. This will enhance your body's ability to remove toxins from your tissues. A proper massage will release toxins and metabolic waste products from your tissues/cells.

As for Myofascial Release, it can be very effective in releasing fascial restrictions and any residual physical/emotional trauma that the body is holding. Fascia is the body's connective tissue and it holds many structures together. It runs throughout the body and has 4 main layers. You may ask the therapist to demonstrate the technique during the session, if they have been trained in that method.

Good Luck and have a great session.
