You have gotten some excellent responses. I have panic disorder so I understand what you are going through. I know that if I focus on the panic it tends to come and go in waves. If I distract myself then it tends to go faster.

This sounds silly but I have:

counted backwards by 3s (starting at 100) I really had to concentrate because of the pa which also made decrease faster.

I sang a song with my children. Old McDonald. That song made me concentrate on what animal I had named last which forced me to not focus on the pa's as much.

I did the hokey pokey. Crazy I know! LoL It was so weird that I made myself laugh and the pa decreased.

Again, these sound silly but they have worked for me. It is important to try to slow your breathing down and get out of your thoughts.

Panic attacks will obliterate all your reasonable ways of thinking.
You think you might want to die and even hope that you will...anything to relieve the attacks. Breathing slowly and deeply, to a count helps. Like inhale (threw the nose) to the count of four and exhaling (threw the mouth) to the count of four might help. The counting keeps your mind somewhat off the attack. Anxiety counseling, group counseling helps. But we sometimes need an anti anxiety drug. And, what the heck, if you need it that's okay. It'll get those brain chemicals back in balance. It's better then having those panic attacks. Good Luck

Once one has a panic attacks and becomes fearful of it, it repeats. So what you should do when a panic attack comes is not be scared. It will go away by itself. I tell you this because I suffered from panic attacks for a year. Argentox2@yahoo.com

My first big time attack I went to the emergecy room, flew through the doors like i was having a heart attack, totally embaressed myself then had to pay $1500 dollars to sit there for two hours get stupid tests to find out anxiety was all that was wrong.Well, i decided that was not going to be a recurring story in my life, so i took xanax for a couple weeks then i really started getting into my own brain. For the most part, I just need to be on my own. Ill go for a drive, go out to smoke a cigarette, anything to be by myself for a couple minutes, and I start to say to myself, hey look your fine you know exacty whats going on, its happened a hundred times before, I start racionalizing(whoa, bad spelling) with my own self which is a strange thing. but it works, and i dont take the drugs at all anymore, not even when its bad, because ive been able to calm myself so much even though its not always an easy thing, and i get so mad and throw a fit because i cant make it stop, then it stops!you just need to trust yourself, trust your body, if it starts to happen, tell yourself and repeat, that you know exacty how it is going to feel, and if it was something really bad, you would not know what was coming next. i deal with it almost everyday, its all about being able to tell yourself its no big deal, your not going to let that take over your life, then switching your thoughts to something positive.

Once an attack occurs, you can not stop it. But trying to do deep breathing excersizes helps. It is a scarey thing, I suffered for 3 years, not knowing what was going on. Now, I practice the breathing everday and psycho-therapy does wonders. You should see a psychologist and maybe get a script forAnxiety medication. You don't have to take it forever, just until you are able to function with out it. Try and keep your self busy, excersize also helps. God Bless

I use to have these often and I thought I was dying. I went to the emergency room a couple of times. I was told to do some things to prevent them like decreasing my caffeine intake. However I was told that during an attack to rub my neck. That really works. I close my eyes, take deep breaths and rub the side of my neck. I also agree that getting some fresh air really helps. I now take medication that helps me with that problem.

I go outside to get some fresh air, drink a glass of water as slowly as I can, or try to get my mind to focus on something else--twirling each of my fingers individually or tensing and relaxing each muscle in my body. The point is to pay extra attention to the physical; the more I'm concentrating on something tangible, the easier it is for me to come down from a panic attack.

Panic attacks are a horrid thing. One thinks that they are going to die and I do sympathize with you. a good way to slow your breathing down is to get a paper bag and hold it to your mouth, take deep breaths and slowly let it out,( into bag) continue until they have subsided , This will work, All the best
