I love dairy of all kinds and could live on it. However, I recognize that I probably overdo it, and I'm trying to lose weight. I have NO allergies to dairy but think I'd like to try going without for a week (or since it's Lent, maybe the whole 40 days :). I'd like to know the real health benefits of a milk-free diet. Objective, scientific answers, and specific as possible, PLEASE...not political statements. Thanks!

My child is on a dairy free diet - and the benefits are numerous when you realize that there is a cow on the label of Elmer's glue because glue is made from cow's milk (it's the casein in it that makes the glue sticky and it's that same casein that gums up the works in humans). Cow's milk is good for strong bones - goat's milk is good for brain power and it is much more easily digested by humans.

We use goat cheese (or mozzarella, which is very low in casein) and Rice Dream milk (the regular is perfect in cereal). We used to use goat's milk when Iris was a baby, but not so much now for no real reason except rice milk comes in a more convenient container.

Please don't switch to soy products - they are super estrogenic and can be very harmful in the long run. I would also suggest thinking about doing a cleanse while you are off cow's milk to help flush it out of your system. This is the perfect time of year for such things. Here's a link to the product I use: http://www.mynsp.com/carole/products/guide.aspx?stockNum=3993 If nothing else, it will surely help your health to clean out while you are off the cow's milk - sort of give you a fresh start.

Peace!
