I'm not really giving up anything exactly. I have trouble with my prayer life so I'm going to spend 15 -30 minutes in prayer each day.

I was raised Catholic so please forgive the direct pointedness of this comment...
Where is it biblical to give up something for "Lent"?
I went to church 18 years, went through a whole lot of Lents and Ash Wednesdays... then became an atheist... then by God's mercy, I have been reborn in Christ.
God is not looking for a sacrifice for you for a 40 day period. He is looking for a relationship with you. Christ has already provided the sacrifice.
And not to sound sarcastic, but if you give up alcohol, you wouldn't be able to receive communion. (On another note though, I like the idea of giving that up. [that being alcohol])
Please consider why you are giving something up for this period and why you feel this is important. Are you doing this for men or for God? (And if it's for the latter, where does he desire this?)

Rather than give something up, I'm going to go to daily Mass during Lent. It deepens my prayer life for those 40 days, and I always get a lot out of it. God bless!

As I was raised in the Christian faith, alcohol is bad and should not be used. catholics apparently can do about anything that is sinful and get pardoned by their priest. It amazes me how many people that are catholic are sacrificing their vices--usually alcohol for Lent! What a hoot! Christians who live christian lives would not partake of alcohol since it damages the body and causes misjudgements that are not properly christian principles. I know that catholics view themselves as christian, but their acts and practices surely are much different than most christian religions.

I'm going to give up bad food like cookies and cake. but i try to give that up anyways. I would like to do it like Ramadan and just not eat or drink during daylight, maybe that'll be next year.
