What I can suggest to you is to join the Yahoo group: Senior Cats. The group owner is a marvel at interpreting such things - all the numbers from a hyperthyroid cat. She is very knowledgeable on this subject.

I have a cat recently diagnosed with mild hyperthyroidism and he has started to take medication. I will want to do the radio iodine treatment too as I did it for another cat 7 years ago.

Sibbohan may be able to tell you the significance of the low specific gravity and she might know of something to correct it.

You go to: Yahoogroups.com and search for Senior Cats and request membership and that should go through in 24 hours or so.

Your cat's hyperthyroidism can probably be treated medically, instead of with radioiodine therapy. Talk to your vet again about the options. A specific gravity of 1.030 (which is what I presume you meant) is not alarming, but may indicate reduced kidney function. Ask your vet about the corresponding kidney blood values, BUN and Creatinine. Never be afraid to ask as many questions as you need to understand your cat's health. If your vet is unwilling to explain things to your satisfaction, you may consider getting a second opinion, preferably from a feline practitioner.

the place our vet refered hyperthyroid cats to would not do radioactive therapy unless all lab values were prefect. 1.030 is on the low side for specific gravity. It indicates his kidneys are not concentrating urine as well as they should be.

not sure what you are asking because your question sort of ends with a wierd statement. Your doctor can't do what? if your cat has hyperthyroidism it can be treated, you can change vets and help your kitty. never give up on your cat
