I am curious , I usually eat from 800-950 calories a day. i am curious If i happen to eat like 1050 would I gain weight. it is still below maintenance so does that mean i could still lose weight? I worked out today and the elliptical says i burned like 930 calories but i know it's a bit less. so would i have to stay below maintenance to lose or abosolutley have to eat the amount i usually do to lose.

Ok , alot of you think I am actually burning 900 calories a day on the elliptical, I am not those things are inaccurate. I would say i am burning maybe 700 but no more than 800.

No matter what you currently weigh, you are eating far too little! Your body is currently in starvation mode- it's holding on to any morsel of food and fat for dear life- literally!

If you are a girl you need to be consuming at least 1200 a day- male, 1500. If you don't you are destroying your metabolism, which isn't good on any level. These numbers are a balance number, too- not just an intake level. If you're burning 900+ calories a day with exercise and only eating about that many, you're running a seriously unhealthy calorie defecit! Your body burns 1200-1500 calories a day just to keep you alive! You should never have a defecit of more than 1000, and if you're trying to maintain, you shouldn't have one at all.

Up your calorie intake to at least this daily minimum. You will probably gain some weight initially, but your body will stabalize once it realizes that the food will keep coming, and all will be well again.

Are you sure that you only eat 800 calories a day? That doesn't sound possible if you are still healthy and able to function. Unless you are so short you are almost a dwarf. But to answer your question, if you eat more than the amount of calories your body burns normally in a day, called the baseline I think, then you will gain weight. You need to first figure out how many calories a day you burn, and I'm sure you burn more than 950.

hope this helps, but under normall everyday life you maintain your weight by eating 2,000 calories. keep doing what you are and you'll never gain weight. step up the exercise and you can take in alot more. Many years ago lumberjacks here in Maine worked hard dawn to dusk. Their normal calorie intake was a whooping 6000 calories and they never gained an ounce. But eat a healthy diet, they ate 5-6 meals a day heavy on pies, cakes, breads and bean hole beans cooked up with alot of salt pork and molasses.

Oh, honey... you need help. You seem desperately close to having an eating disorder.

You need to eat at least 1200 calories per day just to stay out of starvation mode. If you burn 900 calories per day, you can actually eat 2100 calories and not gain weight.

-Unless-
You are in starvation right now. Your body is now resistant to losing weight, and you are doing damage to your metabolism that can haunt you for the rest of your life. PLEASE GET HELP AS SOON AS POSSIBLE. Call your doctor now, or the moment his/her office opens in the morning. Please, stop hurting yourself with this routine!

Use a program such as http://www.calorieking.com (comes with free trial) to keep track of your nutrition. I wouldn't trust the measurements of burned calories on machines. Calorieking will tell you whether you are eating too little or too much compared to your place on the bio mass index, and will even tell you whether or not your are losing or gaining weight. There's other free programs like this, but I found this one the easiest to use.
