I at first thought she was teething b/c she'd lay on her somache and bite on the tile on the floor. She eats books, and any paper she gets her hands on, but the other morning I had to move her crib away from the wall b/c I noticed she'd eaten some of the paint off it. I thought it was just a one time thing, but I caught her again today standing at the wall just chowing down. Could it be teething? I've heard it could be calcium deficiency, but she drinks a ton of milk.

Omg! Ask a pediatrician or get her a teething ring!

The first thing that came to my mind was Pica- a disorder that causes a child to eat non-edible things, usually that have a high mineral content. Often children who are deficient in IRON have these types of issues- not calcium. Have your child checked for anemia (lowered iron in the blood) done with a simple finger-prick test at the pediatricians. Talk to the doc about the things that your child is eating or licking that they shouldn't be. Also have the paint on your walls tested for lead. If the paint is older than 1975, or has been painted over a layer from pre-75, then it is possible that it contains dangerous levels of lead. Lead poisioning from ingesting paint with lead can cause brain damage. By two, most children have the cognitive awareness to understand what is to be eaten and what is not edible. This is not normal behavior, and you should talk to your child's pediatrician about it. Pica can be a serious disorder if it is not controlled early on.

Anemia.

This describes her eating all these thing because of iron deficiency. In January my brothers daughter ate a bunch of oxygen absorber packets and almost died.

If any normal person tasted these, they would not continue eating it, but she was anemic so the iron in the packets tasted good to her.

Try increasing her iron intake.

I am not saying she will be put in the hospital and almost die. My niece was like this from the oxygen absorber, not anemia.

Give her Flintstones multivitamins, and lots of iron. She may also be teething, so a chewy ring might be helpful!

It's a vitamin deficiency. Mention it to your doctor. They will recommend what she needs to eat to get back on track. Usually when teething they want something hard to chew on, but not like you are describing. I'm a mom to 3. I know for WIC they ask questions like this.

She may be having a "stage". She might want to taste anything she finds and then if she likes it she begins to chow down. It could be teething, it could be that her body is missing something so she's eating things you don't want her to eat. You should consult your doctor and get her a check-up to see what she needs.

Thank god I am not the only one who had to deal with this!!! My niece (who I lived with and helped raise) would eat EVERYTHING.........deodorant, lotion, crayons, markers......there was no end to what she would eat......
All I can say is keep things that she will eat out of her reach, don't be surprised when you find tooth marks in your deodorant, and marker staining her teeth/lips........and hang in there. she will outgrow it. my niece is now 5 and is a happy, healthy, non-eating machine...........although she did eat the dog biscuit that she made a reindeer out of this Christmas.......
I guess it is safe to say that she will mostly outgrow it. Hang int here. you are NOT alone........

I've seen lots of kids do stuff like that. I work in daycare. Most of the time, they are just exploring the world around them. Just make sure she doesn't get hold of anything that will harm her.
