I have a jack russel and she barks alot when people come to the door. I really do not like it but mty dad wants her to be a guard dog and I've tried giving him alternatives but he won't listen(eg. a door bell). So I want to train my dog to bark once when people come to the door and then stop. I'm looking at those special no-bark citronella collars because you can set them to allow your dog one bark but since they're expensive they are my last resort.
Please help!!!

This is a pretty specialized behavior you are expecting from your dog.

Not that it can't be done...but is it really worth the effort? I am all for dog training, but I think in this case you may not be able to teach the dog to bark once and stop. You are asking the dog to alert you to someone's presence at the door--what good is one bark going to do you?

I think you either have to allow the dog to bark or stop it all together.

Ceaser Milan does stories on these problems all the time. Force your dog to bark in a normal barking situation i.e. when someone knocks on the door. Be there with him and correct him after one bark. Shush him and direct him to go lay down or sit. Try over and over till he gets it. Be forceful, but do not hit or use his name when disciplining.

You should have gotten a cat that doesn't bark, dogs bark, one day you might be happy the dog did bark,it can save your life ;-)
