In the OT the Levitical priests lived off the tithe. Tithe was always a food issue and never money. The apostle Paul refused to take a wage, nor would he allow any financial offerings to be collected when he was there to preach. the offerings were never for a church organization but to help other Christians that were suffering from drought. The church is the entire worlds Christians, it is no one building or denomination. The early church was a gathering of believers in the community and they would meet at someones house. They had an unpaid spiritual leader, it was the religious in the Roman church that took wages. No one in the Bible ever attended or started a church as we know of them today. No man of God would ever take money for preaching but then again it is hard to find a man of God behind a pulpit for organized denominationalized religion is not of God. Jesus spoke harshly to the religious leaders of the day and constantly warned to stay away from religion. Then you don't understand the concept ... The First Oldest Profession. How do good preachers do their works and support themselves? I used to be Mormon. They never got paid. Of course the congregation shared in the duties of the church. Other churches hire a dedicated preacher to do off Sunday work like visiting the sick, blessing the dying, helping the needy in the congregation. That is almost a full time job in itself.

Matthew, chapter 10, verse 8.---"Freely you have received, freely give." The gospel is not for sale. This doesn't mean a pastor should not get paid for other services other than the preaching of the message of salvation.

It actually says the opposite:

"Let the elders that rule well be counted worthy of double honour [pay], especially they who labour in the word and doctrine. For the scripture saith, Thou shalt not muzzle the ox that treadeth out the corn. And, The labourer is worthy of his reward."
(1Timothy 5:17-18)

It doesn't. In the O.T. the Priests lived off of part of the tithes. The same in the N.T.
