He only does this when I first change the litter. Is he senile?

I lost my Fred at 13 and he was great. Eating kitty litter sounds like he is missing some mineral in his diet or it could be feline dementia (a.k.a. CCD - Crazy Cat Disorder). I would ask his veterinarian and get him some type of vitamin/mineral supplement and try it. Cats rule! If your cat is 16 then he's 82 in human years so he has earned a right to be senile. :) Good Luck!

I have three cats right know, but i did have four. Before my one cat passed away she would eat cat litter and she did it because i had changed her litter type or her food type. Eventually i brought her to the doctor and i had found out that she had bladder problems and that she(the cat) thought the fact of me changing the litter was causing it.

How odd! Sounds like senility! Actually, I haven't a clue - at 16 he's old enough not to argue with him!

can cats be senile?? its probably a nutrient or mineral deficiency. Try getting it catnip or something else.

Eating clay litter can be a sign of anemia. Has he been to the vet recently? Have you done bloodwork? If not, please make an appointment, or at least call your vet to discuss.

Litter is clay. Clay is iron. Perhaps the kitty is anemic....Iron deficient. Your vet could easily tell you or you could just give her some kitty vitamins with iron.
